It’s been some time since the events of the first story arc in Once & Future. Duncan is no longer just a museum curator, and has embraced the family business, taking on tasks Rose gives him, as she also takes on her new role. The relationship with his gran is still rocky, but improving, as he begins asking for her advice to best deal with the creatures he encounters. But when a mission sends Duncan to London, things start to get crazier, and Duncan can’t ignore working on things with Bridgette. All the while, something else is beginning, and it looks like more challenges await Duncan.
I binged the first six issues in preparation for the review copy of issue seven, and fell so hard for this series. Duncan is such a pure and heroic character, and so well written by Kieron Gillen. Seeing his growth through the series, and watching him really embrace his family’s monster hunting history by issue seven is so satisfying. Alongside Duncan, we have Gran and Rose, both trying in their own ways to guide Duncan along his new path. The twist on Arthurian legend combined with this legacy of monster hunting is so much fun, and so enjoyable, you can’t help but be sucked in.
The art is absolutely gorgeous. Dan Mora’s illustrations are incredibly stunning, and some of my favorite I think I’ve seen in recent years. They add so much visually to the story, the designs for the characters are interesting, and the monsters and scenery are epic. Along with Tamra Bonvillain’s exquisite use of color (seriously, it’s ridiculously good), and Ed Dukeshire’s excellent lettering, this is an absolute knockout issue.
Issue seven of Once & Future is a worthy successor to the first arc of the story, and I cannot wait to see where this talented team takes us next. Both volume one, which collects #1-6, as well as the new issue, release on 3/25/20. If you can safely get out to your shop, contact them to mail books to you, or do curbside pickup – grab the first volume of Once & Future, as well as issue seven, and not only help your local comic shop out, as well as get yourself a new series to keep yourself entertained.
