5 TV Shows I’m Probably Never Going to Finish and 5 More I Should Give Another Chance
I watch a whole lot of TV, I should probably be watching a whole lot more, though. We’re in a Golden Age of small screen content spurred by way too many streaming services throwing as much money as they possibly can to create compelling, riveting, must-see television. But there’s only so many hours in a day, and some very good television just isn’t all that…good. I’ve been wrong before, though, so here’s 5 TV shows I’ll likely never finish and 5 more I may try again.
I’m Probably Never Going to Finish Agents of SHIELD
I’m first and foremost a comic book guy. I adore them! I probably read at least 20 books in any given week, so Agents of SHIELD should be right up my alley, but after watching the first season or two, I just wasn’t a fan.
I’ve heard things get a whole lot better after the point where I initially stopped, but I just don’t see me wading through the muck to get to better stuff.
I Should Give Another Chance to Star Trek Discovery
After comics, Star Trek is my main thing. I cut my teeth on The Original Series, literally grew up on The Next Generation gaining most of my morals from Captain Picard and Data, adored Deep Space 9 for its differences and Voyager for its familiarity, and even stuck around for Enterprise despite it’s problems. But all that still felt like Trek, Disco does not, but that’s okay.
I was immediately turned off by Discovery due to my own hangups with things like consistency and continuity, but those things shouldn’t stop me from enjoying quality, and Disco IS quality science fiction television. It’s just…different.
I’m Probably Never Going to Finish Doctor Who
I don’t know if it’s the sheer amount of Who content there is or the fact that I’m just not a fan of most things British, but I’ve never been able to get into Doctor Who. I’ve tried (most) of the individual Doctor debuts, a few comics, even some of the audio stuff, but it just isn’t for me.
The fanboy outcry over the newest Doctor was kind of weird for me as I agreed that it was not all that great, but it wasn’t any worse or better than anything else I’ve seen from the franchise.
I Should Give Another Chance to Black Mirror
Black Mirror is a modern day The Twilight Zone, full of relevant and terrifying premises all involving technology and society’s obsession with it, and every episode I’ve seen has a tendency to stick with you for a while after viewing…which is why I never finished it.
When I say these episodes “stick” with you, I mean I was haunted by this show in a way that I just couldn’t shake. I’d have a severe case of the creeps for days, literally giving me nightmares after a binge. While I do plan on watching Black Mirror again, it’s going to take some time.
I’m Probably Never Going to Finish Altered Carbon
Altered Carbon started off with a bang, immersing viewers into this strange and vibrant future world full of overly complex character development, sex, and drug use. But somewhere along the way I just got lost.
Somewhere between a way too over-the-top shootout in what I think was a robot whorehouse and the main character being replaced with a different actor which made perfect sense to the overall scope of the story, I found myself not having a clue what was going on and, even worse, I didn’t really mind.
I Should Give Another Chance to The Expanse
I’m not even really sure why I stopped watching The Expanse. I likely just had other stuff to watch and I forgot about it. What a dumb mistake on my part!
This things plays out like political science fiction, uses an amazing assortment of actual science to create its world, and is just plain old great sci-fi with a surprising level of really cool special effects at work. If you’ve slept on this (like I did, apparently) don’t.
I’m Probably Never Going to Finish Stargate
I really enjoyed that Stargate movie despite all the problems I had with it. It’s a fun, throwaway sort of film that includes some great sci-fi tropes just good enough to get over a mediocre story. But Stargate fans are nuts!
There’s like five different Stargate series! I’m pretty sure there’s a streaming service JUST for all the Stargate stuff. I’m not knocking fans of this franchise at all, but that’s way too much content based off a movie that I barely enjoyed.
I Should Give Another Chance to All the DC Shows
I kept with much of the whole Arrowverse thing for quite some time, but it’s an unrelenting release of TV week after week. There’s like six of these damn shows all interconnecting with each other like some big TV Multiverse…and that’s a good thing.
While I’ve skipped much of these shows in recent years, I always come back for the big annual crossovers, because they are that damn good. Maybe it’s The CW’s soap opera style, maybe it’s the hours needed to catch up, but it’s something I’m going to have to get over, because I really want to have watched all of the Arrowverse.
I’m Probably Never Going to Finish The Walking Dead
Another hit comic book series means another hit TV show, and although I kept up the main series for quite a few seasons, it all got so repetitive and tiring. First I lost all interest in the story, then the investment in the characters shortly follows, then the entire fear of a main character being offed anywhere but in a finale went completely away.
What started as a great zombie show full of compelling drama became just another television drama that just happened to have some zombie in it. Now with there being a second series ongoing and more planned, there’s no way I can begin to care.
I Should Give Another Chance to Game of Thrones
I was never a fan of Game of Thrones. Don’t get me wrong, I love fantasy, but I’m more a fan of the PG-13 variety and the stuff this series did just seemed to be sensational for the sake of sensationalism. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. Then that finale his and everyone hated it, which only perked my ears higher.
I want to love Game of Thrones. I really do. I just couldn’t buy into the hype as it was happening during the original run of the series. Now that everyone hates it and it’s over, I feel I can give it another shot and not have everyone hate me for hating it.
