Sertraline Clouded Minds & Silver Lines EP Review
Prog tech metallers Sertraline are back with a follow-up to 2017’s Guilty with a new EP, Clouded Minds & Silver Lines. The five-piece outfit dazzle on the EP thanks to their secret weapon, that is set to put them on everyone’s radar.
Sertraline musically does everything by the book, but the book is a real page-turner. The riffs are heavy, energetic, and have a great hook. Their secret weapon, Lizzie Parry’s vocals, on the other hand, are what turn Sertraline into something special. Parry’s range is incredible switching from clean to screams with ease adding layers to the performance.
It’s unfortunate but the band does peak at the start of the EP. That’s not to say the other tracks aren’t good, it’s just opening track Inside Out is the standout. Parry demonstrates an incredible level of dexterity to her vocals, for deep low notes to graceful notes of grandeur. The guitars are a driving force with never-ending momentum.
Mean to Me II follows and again the vocals are strong and the guitars are fierce but they don’t pop, as they possibly could. 2205 has a sweet opening that’s a change of pace before exploding with energetic guitars and great percussion. Three tracks in and Clouded Minds & Silver Lines has established a solid sound and the guitar solo on 2205 is an ear pleasure.
Screaming For Sleep is full of energy for the drums and guitar and some of the best on the EP. This is perhaps second for best tracks on the EP for its energy and catchy chorus. The EP concludes with Isolation a track that despite being written last year perfectly encapsulates current world events. This is also one of the more stripped-back tracks on the EP allowing for the subtle instrumentals to come through.
Sertraline is on the right steps with Clouded Minds & Silver Lines as this EP shows great promise. There are some amazing standouts and some that have potential. This is an EP that’s worth your time from a band that should be on your radar.
Sertraline are also hosting a live-streamed listening party and Q&A for the EP on their Facebook Page today (14th May) at 8:15 pm UK time.
