Tony: Paul is Dead: When The Beatles Lost Paul
I am a madman for conspiracy theories and this one about Paul McCartney secretly dying and being replaced by a lookalike is one that I’ve studied for some time. Joe: Birds of Prey #1
I’m most excited for the Birds of Prey one-shot. Written by Brian Azzarello and printed under DC’s Black Label imprint. Plus the solicitation says the book is the length of a graphic novel (in Prestige format no less!). Pretty excited to see Azzarello write a story set in Gotham who’s main characters isn’t The Bat. A darker take on the BOP will be a nice change of pace from the team’s series penned by Connor or released at the beginning of Rebirth.
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Emaneula Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy
Black Canary’s life has spiraled out of control: her personal life is going through the ringer and her band is in crisis when an old flame resurfaces only to flicker out and set her on an all-new mission against an all-new opponent. The only thing she has to be grateful for is the fact that she’s not alone, as Huntress finds herself on a collision course with Black Canary’s quarry at Detective Montoya’s urging. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn has resurfaced outside of Gotham City and out of the Suicide Squad, with a new lease on life that is sure to make everyone else’s life more complicated.
And that’s only the first five pages of this high-octane, graphic novel-length one-shot that pushes the Birds of Prey far beyond their limits and puts them up against the most brutal crime syndicate to ever sweep into Gotham City! Hardboiled superstar writer Brian Azzarello and the bombshell art team of Emanuela Lupacchino and Ray McCarthy take the Birds into the no-holds-barred world of Black Label, and none of them will ever be the same! John Lee: The Boys: Dear Becky #1

Angel and Amani: Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Special #1
Angel: I’m most excited for the Catwoman 80th anniversary special. Catwoman was my first favorite when I was a little girl, and I’ve loved her still to this day. So finally getting her 80th anniversary book is pretty exciting for me. I love the different beautiful covers, as well. It’s going to be difficult picking my favorites.
Amani: Looking forward to Catwoman’s 80th! Selina Kyle is on of the golden standards for femme fatales. In most interpretations of Catwoman, she’s been a mix of glitz, glam, and sultry with an attitude and personality to match. What more could childhood me want in a female villain? 100 pages of Catwoman mystery and glamour is a book I can’t miss.
Our gal Catwoman is turning 80 next year (and looking very good, if we meow say), and DC is celebrating with nothing less than with a huge soiree, invite only, packed with creators who mean the most to her and to whom she means the most! Stories featured in this 100-page spectacular include a tail-sorry, tale-that takes place at the end of the Brubaker/Stewart Catwoman run, in honor of artist Darwyn Cooke. Plus, Catwoman is caught by an exotic cat collector, runs into a wannabe thief trying to prove himself as her apprentice, encounters a mystery involving memorabilia from alternate continuities, and of course some Bat/Cat fun.

With the Federation border in sight, a villain revealed will subject Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise to their most dangerous challenge yet-where everything comes to a head in a battle for the fate of the five-year mission!

Tom: Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew #1
This title got a lot of heat when it was first announced as the celebration issue for Nancy Drew, and I can see why. However, I am excited by the premise and after becoming a fan of the recent CW show. I’m excited to see where this series goes as there are bound to be some twists along the way.

Thomas: Swamp Thing Giant #4
With the return of new comics DC seems to be getting back into the Swamp of Things while the House of Ideas languishes in reprints (seriously people Marvel has no new issues solicited this week). Never fear though as this week the new Swamp Thing Giant debuts! Sadly, this is the only place to get new Swamp stories aside from his role in Justice League Dark. Hopefully, the Distinguished Competition will take heart and return the Swamp Thing to his rightful place within the DCU! We need a new solo Swampy series now! Not to mention clocking in at 100 pages for only $4.99 this is one heck of a bargain.
Writer: Mark Russell, Various
Artist: Tom Mandrake, Various
Swamp Thing Giant #4 includes these new stories:
- “Strategic Outcomes,” a 16-page story written by Mark Russell with art by Marco Santucci
At Sunderland’s request, the U.S. military is testing ways to annihilate the monstrous threat known as the Swamp Thing. From swamp to city they’ll hunt him, and while their target tries to keep the innocent from becoming collateral damage, the same can’t be said of his pursuers.
- “Toys on Parade,” an 8-page story story written by Phil Hester with art by Tom Mandrake
Deep in the bayou, Swamp Thing continues to follow the fifolet, despite not knowing the mysterious spirit’s ultimate destination. On his way he encounters a strange and powerful girl locked away in the swamp, with magical friends and a monster at her door.
Plus, these reprint tales:
- “Be Careful What You Wish For,” from Swamp Thing #4 (2016)
- “The Poison Truth part four,” from The Hellblazer #4 (2017)
- “Playing with Fire,” from Zatanna #4 (2010)

A.J.: The Red Mother Volume 1
I’m looking forward to BOOM! Studios’ THE RED MOTHER Vol 1 (in a softcover “Discover Now Edition”), and also THE RED MOTHER #5. I’ve long been a Jeremy Haun fan, and for a lot of reasons, e.g., the originality of the premise in his series THE BEAUTY. I also really liked artist Danny Luckert’s work on REGRESSION – his distinctive style is pleasing to the eye, almost inspiring at times, with a very sophisticated look.
Writer: Jeremy Haun
Artist: Danny Luckert
After losing her eye and the man she loves in a brutal mugging, Daisy McDonough is left trying to put the pieces of her life back together. Just when she begins to think she can heal, she begins to see strange things through her new prosthetic eye. And The Red Mother sees her in return. Writer Jeremy Haun (The Beauty, The Realm) and artist Danny Luckert (Regression) present The Red Mother, a creeping horror series that examines the dangers that hide in plain sight – and the consequences of digging beneath the surface to find the truth underneath. Collects issues #1-4 in a comic book shop exclusive edition.
Publisher: BOOM Studios
Brian: Wretches #5
I have been a fan of this series since the very beginning. If you’re into futuristic stories revolving around kid-napping, brain washing, drug dealing robot bad guys, you would be to. With a Netflix series in development right now, it may be wise to get in on this story early before the speculators swipe them all up. I personally can’t wait to see if Sean is able to rescue his sister, Shea, and if so, will she ever be able to look at Sean the same way again after all she has been through? I’m stoked to find out.
Writer: James E Roche
Artist: Salo Farias
Sean is forced to help the twisted bot who’d kidnapped him in the first place, as he attempts to infiltrate an alien city and rob the local drug-lord. The reward for his aid in this violent raid- the “promise” of getting Shea back in one-piece once they succeed. After being taken through their slums, Shea begins to recognize that the average bots and their wants aren’t any different than those of humans – to live their lives in peace. Unfortunately for her, these bots are still under the rule of a power-hungry tyrant, and her execution is imminent.

David: The Last God Sourcebook #1
There isn’t a title that immediately draws my attention coming out this week. However, DC’s Black Label series Last God has been a great read. With this sourcebook, you can now set a 5e D&D campaign in Cain Anuun.
Writer: Philip Kennedy Johnson, Dan Telfer
To look upon the Book of Ages is to know the world of Cain Anuun’s past, present, and perhaps even its future. Long believed to be the first text ever recorded, the Book of Ages contains the most complete history of Cain Anuun’s peoples and their gods. Welcome to the official sourcebook to the world of The Last God, detailing the rich history of its peoples, locations, schools of magic, a bestiary of the creatures found throughout Cain Anuun, and much more.
In this amazing one-shot, writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson joins forces with Dan Telfer (dungeon master of the Nerd Poker podcast) to bring you 5E compatible content for playable races, subclasses, magic items, monsters, and more that you can use in your favorite tabletop role-playing game, accompanied by epic illustrations by Riccardo Federici and Kai Carpenter, as well as new maps and illustrations from master cartographer Jared Blando.
In this ‘Book of Ages, you’ll find everything to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the world of Cain Anuun, while also giving tabletop gamers everything they need to build campaigns and adventures within The Last God.
Publisher: DC Comics/Black Label
For those of you who might want to do some crowdfunding this week, Sean has a project for you…
Sean: The Plot Holes
Sean Gordon Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus, Tokyo Ghost, and White Knight) has an upcoming original release that he calls “a love letter to editors.” A story about a team of heroes known as “The Plot Holes” and their epic journey to go into different stories and fix them.
There’s a manga, comic book, vampire assassin, barbarian fantasy, and comic strip character. One can only imagine the various styles and stories that will emerge. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal for a chance to own not only a SGM original, but each copy comes signed. Anyways, check it out yourself.
