Oh, hey, Mom. I just got through reading some more AWA comics. They are writing some of the best stories out there right now. Not bad at all for a brand spanking new company. I just finished Archangel 8 #2. The first issue was great. No, I didn’t say I just read #7, I just read #2. Well, yeah, seven does come before eight. No, Mom, it’s issue #2, but it’s the 8th Archangel. I don’t know why they didn’t start with the 1st Archangel then work their way up to the 8th one. Yes, I’m sure the first seven would be just as interesting. I said I don’t know! Geesh! Sorry about that, OG peeps. Now, let’s get to this week’s Dandy Don the Valiant’s weekly review.
Artists, Writers, & Artisans, Inc. (AWA Studios) is a brand spanking new comic book company that keeps releasing top notch stories with head turning covers. Writer Michael Moreci keeps setting the table for his Archangel 8 mini-series. Issue #2 is another lesson in masterful storytelling. Another page turner loaded with action and murderous mayhem. As I previously noted when I reviewed issue #1, these are not the nice and peaceful angels you may have heard about in Sunday School class, so be forewarned. These angels are gritty, foul-mouthed, and ready to shed some blood. But are these angels really carrying out the work of God here or are they rogue angels carrying out their own brand of justice? Are these angels still occupants of Heaven or have they been kicked out?
The angel Raziel has been given an order by another angel named Gabriel (issue #1) to seek out a target and dispose of him. The target stays at least one step ahead of him at every turn. Raziel runs into another angel towards the end of this issue. They have an interesting conversation about choices. Do you want to know who that angel is and what their conversation was about? Call your LCS and put this series on your pull list. It will be interesting to find out if Raziel has been sent to take out a rogue heavenly angel or maybe a satanic one. This premise has the possibility of so many story lines, that this should be a long-running series, although it’s only slated to be a five-issue run. I have a feeling that when this mini-series ends, there will be another one soon to follow due to popular demand.
Writer Michael Moreci has been blessed with a storytelling gene for the ages. Jeff Dekal is creating masterpiece covers that should be framed immediately after reading the issue. C.P. Smith continues his gritty, but fabulous art. His style works perfectly for this type of dark and moody story. Snakebite Cortez (I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: He may have the coolest name in comics) can color with the best of them. If AWA continues with these kinds of books, writers, and artists, this company will rise to the top of the Independents in no time. While it’s virtually impossible to bypass Marvel and DC in sales, the writing that AWA is putting out is better than anything the big two are doing right now.
Yes, Mom, Archangel #7 might be considered the lucky one. I don’t know why he doesn’t have his own series. No, I’m not going to ask them why! Oh, boy.
