Oh, hey, Mom. I just finished reading the exciting second issue of Adventureman from Image Comics. I am loving the female lead in this series. What’s that, Mom? Well, yes, the title does say Adventureman, but the story is focused on a woman right now. She might take over for him one day, but I don’t know for sure yet. Well, yes, Mom, I guess if I found my own place to live instead of your basement, that would be quite an adventure for me. I’m sure that will happen in the very near future. No, I haven’t been saying that for decades! Geesh. Sorry about that, OG peeps. Now, let’s get to this week’s Dandy Don the Valiant’s weekly review.
Matt Fraction keeps bringing the adventure to his Adventureman series published by Image Comics, even though the adventure seems to belong to the female lead at the moment. When issue #1 ended, it seemed that Adventureman met his demise by the evil Baron Bizarre, before we even got to know him and his other pulp hero teammates. This story arc was written in a book that Claire Connell (the female lead who has noise-induced hearing loss) was reading to her son, Tommy. So, is Adventureman a real hero or just a fictional character in a book?
Adventureman #2 starts out with another story from the same book that shows Baron Bizarre capturing a heroine named, Phaedra Phantom. This time, Tommy is reading parts of this story to him mom, Claire. He notices that for the first time ever, the book lists Adventureman’s address, which also happens to be the address of the publisher of the Adventureman book. Then he wonders if maybe Adventureman himself has written this book. So, now we are still trying to figure out if Adventureman is real or just a fictional story. I love the mystery! And the mystery deepens as we learn what job Claire used to have before she started working in her mother’s used bookstore (yeah, you’ll have to find that out on your own). She decides to go investigate this Adventureman address to find out if anything is there. Surprise! It’s there! But only she can see the building. Then she is reminded of another story she read in the book about a sorcerer. All of a sudden, she is pulled through the door of the building. What happens inside? LOOK OUT! You need to call your LCS and get this issue and series added to your pull list to find out what happens to Claire. It’s time to join the adventure.
Matt Fraction has written an adventure that keeps the reader intrigued and wanting more. Just like issue #1, Adventureman #2 never got boring. Another page turner! Now throw in the dynamic comic book duo of Rachel and Terry Dodson sketching, drawing, and creating unbelievable panels and covers that seem to rise off the page, and you realize these adventures are going to go on for many years to come. This series is off to an unbelievable start! This concept by Fraction has been bouncing around in his mind since 2008. I am so excited that Adventureman has been unleashed on the world for all to read. And possibly Adventurewoman? It’s going to be fun finding out!
Now, Mom, you know you would miss me if I moved out. What are doing? Why are you measuring the space down here in the basement? I know the sun bothers you, but I don’t think you can put an underground swimming pool in the basement. Oh, boy.
