Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and aspiring writer Ari Levi brings the world of Mixed Martial Arts to comic books in the first issue of this original series. This independently published, Kickstarter comic follows the life of Leo Lopez. Leo hopes to one day become a champion MMA fighter, but first he’ll have to test his mettle and make a name for himself on the underground cage fighting circuit. Hits are expected in the ring, but Leo must find the strength to withstand the punches life throws at him as well.
A Puncher’s Chance is at its core a character study. That doesn’t keep it from also being full of high-octane action sequences and fight scenes. Levi structures the story in this first issue in an interesting way. He utilizes flashbacks in an organically so that they naturally fit the flow of the storyline. It’s great to see a Latinx main character who’s journey to the ring is relatable to everyone. Even those who don’t know much about professional fighting sports will recognize and relate to Leo’s struggles in life and his resolve to better himself.
Mel draws the book in a style I associated with Manga. This style lends itself well to a story heavily influenced by hand to hand combat. Mel does a great job of illustrating the fight scenes so that the action is highlighted without sacrificing the story’s visual clarity. Whether it be the trajectory of a thrown book, the momentum of a kick or a dazedness of a fighter who just got their bell rung by that kick, Mel’s artistic flourishes sell the reader on both the action and the character moments in this comic. I also enjoyed the use of visual onomatopoeia by the letterer. It’s a nice artistic touch that never makes the panels feel crowded.
Leo Lopez, Ari Levi, and A Puncher’s Chance all have the potential to be something great. This first chapter showcases the beginning of Leo’s journey to greatness as an MMA fighter. It also shows that Levi is just as good at writing an engaging story as he is at martial arts. This first issue is the definition of a comic that leaves the reader wanting more. Luckily, there’s a way to help this series achieve greatness. Check out the A Puncher’s Chance Kickstarter for ways to support the artist and this original series.
