Angel: Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity Secret Files #1
I really enjoy the Criminal Sanity series and this new take on Harley and the Joker. I dig crazy forensic/behavioral analysis stuff, and I love Harley, so it’s perfect for me. I’m excited for more in this series!
Writer: Kami Garcia, Edward Kurz
Harley Quinn is hunting two serial killers: The Joker, a brutal psychopath who murdered her roommate and disappeared years ago, and the unidentified killer currently terrorizing Gotham City. In this one-shot, see pieces of the puzzle on Harley’s investigation board and steal a glimpse into John Kelly’s high school notebook – a book he still carries today. Kami Garcia has been consulting forensic psychiatrist and behavior analyst Edward Kurz, MD, throughout the series to ensure the accuracy of the story and of Harley’s methodology. In this special issue, Dr. Kurz’s work is spotlighted as we reveal secrets from Harley’s past, hidden details of crime scenes, and a real-life profile of The Joker that has driven the progression of his murders in the story!

Joe: Yasmeen #1
Yasmeen #1 is my pick for this week. Published by Scout Comics and written by Saif A. Ahmed, Yasmeen is an important comic that should be on everyone’s radar (and honestly, should be on everyone’s ‘to-buy’ list as well). It’s the story of an Iraqi refugee, specifically her escape from ISIS and her adjustment to American life. If you don’t choose to read the review copied below, here’s one take away; Buy This Book. Support diverse characters, stories, and creative teams. Batman will always be there, comics like Yasmeen may not be if we don’t all do our part to support diversity in the comic book industry.
Check out Joe’s review of Yasmeen #1 here!
Writer: Saif A. Ahmed
Artist: Fabiana Mascolo
Life couldn’t be better for 16 year-old Yasmeen as her family is able to buy a big new house. Then ISIS invades Mosul. Yasmeen’s Shia family barely escapes, while Yasmeen is captured by terrorists and sees her uncle executed. Yasmeen is sold to an ISIS fighter as a slave and must relinquish her innocence in order to save her three new Yazidi friends who are punished with starvation.
Two years later, Yasmeen is reunited with her family in the United States. Her parents are so happy to be reunited with Yasmeen that they fail to see the state of depression that she has fallen into after two years of slavery and torments.
Now faced with a new life, Yasmeen must learn to survive in a society that both fears and hates her and must overcome the horrors of the past in an attempt to find herself again.

Don: Batman #95
Dandy Don the Valiant is geeking out over:
Batman 95 (Joker War Begins). Man, oh, man, writer James Tynion IV knows how to write a story. So glad to see him on the main Batman title. He has been teasing the Joker War story line for the past few issues and across other Bat titles (Detective Comics, Nightwing). It also bleeds over into Batgirl #47 this week, as well. Plus, that 1:25 variant cover is to die for. This story arc is going to be a killer! Light up the Bat Signal! It’s going to get messy!
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Jorge Jiminez
“It was always going to come to this. The Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight Detective go head-to-head for the last time. The Joker has never wanted to win before, he’s never wanted his battle with Batman to end, but now his motivation has shifted. He has decided that one way or another, this will be the final chapter to their story. “Joker War” begins here!”

John Lee: Tales from Harrow County, Volume One: Death’s Choir TP
My daughter kinda suckered me into this universe of Cullen Bunn’s creation. But I’ve got to admit, I’m never disappointed when I reenter this world. The art is unique & the story is the same. While I’m generally not a Graphic Novel guy, I must admit, it’s easier to keep up with & because of my daughter’s love of anime graphic novels, it fits with her collection better, & I’m good to “share” it with her, or she’s nice enough to share with me, I guess.
Writer: Cullen Bunn, Tyler Crook
Artist: Colin McNeil, Jenn Manley Lee
Ten years have passed since Emmy exited Harrow County, leaving her close friend Bernice as steward of the supernatural home. But World War II is in full swing, taking Harrow’s young men and leaving the community more vulnerable than ever-and when a ghostly choir heralds the resurrection of the dead, Bernice must find a solution before the town is overrun.
Collects the four-issue miniseries.

Brian: Chu #1
This is a no brainer for me. As the world’s biggest fan of the classic “Chew”, it’s no wonder this is my most anticipated book of the week, if not year. John Layman is back with Boultwood taking on the art this time as we follow a new member for the Chu family. Excited is an understatement. I’m freaking pumped.

Zack: The Eternals by Jack Kirby Complete Collection TP
If you want to see what Marvel’s next new movie franchise is about, The Eternals by Kirby Complete Collection is a great introduction to Ajax, Sersei, and the group of demigods that influenced human history. It’ll also give context to the Celestials.
Writer: Jack Kirby
Imagine a race of immortal beings possessed of seemingly limitless superhuman abilities. Once worshipped as gods, this fantastic group left Earth to explore the stars after warring with the Greek, Roman and Norse pantheons for supremacy over humankind. They are the Eternals, and they are just one part of a cosmic mythology. Their opposites – the Deviants – also secretly populate the Earth, while the towering cosmic entities that created both – the Celestials – are fated to arrive and judge our planet. This is but the beginning of an epic cosmology of gods and men that sprang forth from the limitless imagination of Jack “King” Kirby, the co-creator of Captain America, the X-Men, the Avengers and more. Now, Kirby’s ETERNALS epic is collected, complete, in this single volume.
Collecting ETERNALS (1976) 1-19, ANNUAL (1977) 1.

Thomas: Amazing Spider-Man: Sins Rising Prelude #1
The original Sin-Eater storyline in Spectacular Spider-Man was one of my favorite storylines of the series. Written by a young Peter David with a cutting edge sensibility the original Sin-Eater saga set the stage for more modern stories featuring the Wall Crawler. Now with the original Sin-Eater returning I couldn’t be more stoked. Spider-Man isn’t a character I read much now as they’ve changed him to much for me but I’m all in board for this one!
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Guillermo Sanna
- Who is the Sin-Eater, and why is it so terrifying that he’s back?
- Nick Spencer pulls back the curtain on one of the most dangerous Spidey villains in history.
- We will not only reveal more of Sin-Eater’s secret history but put him on a collision course with Spider-Man that will have you quaking in your seat.
